RETAN TPC
1. COMPOSITION
Extract of Tara, pyrogallol or hydrolysable tannin, obtained from shelled pods of Coulteria Tinctoria.
2. PHYSICAL and CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Aspect : spraydried powder
Colour : off-white
Total solids : about 94 %
pH (10 % solution) : 3.3 +- 1.0
3. CHARACTERISTICS
RETAN TPC is a very astringent natural extract of Tara.
In order to respect tannin molecules, the extraction is carried out at low temperature. Consequently, there is a remaining percentage of insolubles (between 2 and 5 %). For vegetable tanning with RETAN TPC, it is advised to wash the skins in order to remove the insoluble parts and avoid any spots.
Due to high tannin/no tannin ratio and very low pH, RETAN TPC is very astringent.
Used alone, RETAN TPC produces white, very firm leather. On delimed, unpickled skins, it is easy to obtain shrunken-grain.
4. APPLICATIONS
As RETAN TPC is very astringent, tanners have to handle it with great cautions if it is used alone on pelts. Used in retannage or in mixture with other tannins, RETAN TPC produces firm grain and leather, allows to obtain pastel shades and improves light fastness.
Main applications are :
- Special tannage in natural white
- Tannage of upholstery leather after glutaraldehyde tannage
- Retannage of goat and kid skins
- RETAN TPC facilitates grain-embossing.
